Do you see what I see? This kitchen
backsplash has a lot of outlets, a large window
and not a lot of space. Choosing a larger
format tile wouldn't work here for fear that it
would look too cut up.
Since I had already picked the granite slab
countertop, selecting the tile to use for the
splash was easier since the variety of tiles
available today are endless and stone slabs
can be limiting.
Smaller tiles in a mosaic pattern or sheet tile
would work nicely. As I searched for a tile that
would evoke the quality of the materials
already installed I came across this slate sheet
tile.
It's funny sometimes you'll look and look for
something that you picture in your mind's eye
and you have no success finding it.
Then when you find it you instantly know that's
the right pick!
Looking at the full scope of the kitchen you
can see how using a sheet tile worked so
well in this tile design. Since the island is
curved in the front the tile installation would
need to follow the radius without looking
butchered.
Laying out the tile for the most symmetrical
looking wall was helped also by the fact that
this sheet tile was a mini subway tile pattern
that the tile installer used to his advantage.
Once the sealer was applied the slate took on a
copper finish.
This mud room needed a durable yet appealing
floor covering that would be able to stand up to
the daily use of a large family with pets. This is
a slate sheet tile in a flagstone pattern that was
then enhanced by applying stone impregnator
and sealer. This floor will see years of good use.
As will the tile that was installed for the
counter tops. Our tile setter built the
countertop and is a good
alternative to a solid surface material running
about 1/2 the price of slab and is much better
looking and higher quality then a laminated top.
For return on investment natural stone
products have proven to be the right choice
in updating any kitchen or bathroom.
A small bathroom tiled in slate, travertine
and granite will more than make up in size
when buyers shop for a home that will
appeal to the design trends that are so
popular in today's real estate market.
The sleek modern lines of the toilet and bath
tub along with the clean lines of the vanity
provide the crisp look of sophistication that
is intended to appeal to a variety of buyers.
Today's trend for vanity tops and countertops
in general is to install soild surface materials
which include; granite, marble, Silestone and
alike. Tile has proved to be a good alternative
in design and budget costs.
The edges of this limestone tile is fabricated or
bullnosed by our tile installers, making for a
professionally finished look. The vanity
backsplash is a 4" tumbled travertine with
glass tile mixed in the design and 1/2 round
travertine along the edges.
Not every bathroom is built the
same, to some, size does
matter. If there is no room to
expand your space for
remodeling purposes, then the
selection of materials takes on
greater importance in design
choices.
Although this bathroom floor is
narrow the tile makes it look
wider. Honed travertine 12x12
tile set with 2x2 glass tiles in a
pin-wheel pattern makes for a
very appealing design that
enhances the room's focal point.
As you enter this room your eye
is drawn to the bath area with
it's 12x12 limestone tiles and
decorative tile liners. 1/2 round
travertine tile edging mirrors
the tile design installed on the
bathroom vanity splash.
TILED COUNTERS & BACKSPLASH:
I wanted to show a couple of examples of granite tile
countertops and the edging that can be accomplished by
our tile setters using the techniques of stone fabricators
in order to provide another alternative in designs and
materials. The kitchen countertop is shown with eased tile
edges that are very popular with interior designers. The
two bottom pictures show bullnose edges that required
sanding and polishing. When we began in this business
Tiled countertops ruled supreme. A successful tile
installation means a flat countertop and professional
layout.
Marble is coming back in a big way. In recent years granite was the choice for about 90% of the tile
installations that we were installing. Today marble tile has come back in favor as the tile to use. This 12x12
marble tile exhibits the rust veins popular with this line. I topped this by running a mini tumbled marble
subway tile sandwiching a 2x2 tumbled marble and glass tile liner which is capped by 1/2 round glass tile
liners, which by the way matched the veining in the marble tile perfectly.
Tile and shower pan repair: As specialist in this
field we are called daily in order to ascertain
the origin of leaking shower bases and
solutions or causes for the problems. The
shower pan picture above shows the shower
doors removed and exisiting leaky shower floor.
After tearing out the tile and cement the
shower pan liner is exposed. The liner is
lifted back and the tell tale signs of water
leakage becomes visible by the water
stains on the bathroom shower sub-floor.
After this inspection the liner is found not
to be the cause for the leak.
The problem for the water leak is not the liner,
but HOW the liner was installed. The arrows
show that the liner was not folded over the
shower curb or dam and although the dam was
made of cement water worked it's way down
along the dam. The water stain around the
shower drain was caused because the
bathroom tile contractor neglected to seal the
pan liner and clamping ring together allowing
enough room for the water to leak.
Unfortunately the leak showed up in the kitchen
ceiling downstairs. Shower drain is replaced.
It's a shame that this repair was needed to
be done since the home is only 2 years old.
Another problem with the prior pan
installation was no pre-slope work was
done before the pan was installed.
Once the liner is installed it's tested by
filling with water making sure there are no
leaks. Cement board is then installed to
walls covering the shower pan liner. Mud is
dry packed onto the liner and allowed to
cure before tiling.
In this picture on the left tile is ready for
grout.
This shower pan repair is fixed. 2x2 slate
sheet tile is installed to the shower floor
only after the cement was allowed to cure.
If this procedure is not followed the tile will
not adhere to the floor causing the tile to
discolor and or come off.
The original shower door enclosure is
reinstalled and except for the slight color
difference in the tile lot the shower leak repair
is virtually undetectable. To bad the tile
installer didn't have the experience to install
the liner properly.
OLD HOUSE RENOVATIONS of
kitchens and bathrooms requires
experience and an understanding of
building practices of by gone years before
uniform codes were implemented. Older
homes in Denver usually have very small
bathrooms and even though the bathroom
above would not be expanded upon, there
was a lot of reinforcement to the floor joists
and framing required in order the
installation of cement board. New plumbing
was run by the homeowner and a new
window was installed.
SHOWER WALLS were covered using two
types of tile backer board. The shower valve
wall to the left and the shower wall to the
right were installed using DenShield a
gypsum type wall board reinforced with
fiberglass. Wonder board cement tile backer
board was used for the brick exterior wall
and installed by floating the brick wall out
using poly-modified thin set. The shower seat
to the right was built inside of the pan using
cement blocks and covered with wonder
board. Although DenShield was used for the
shower valve wall, wonder board was used
for the last 12 inches to the shower floor pan.
The sticks you see represent the glass
channels for the frameless glass door
enclosures that would be installed at a later
date. For more information about this
procedure check our shower pan installation.
TRAVERTINE, SLATE and GLASS TILE
INSERTS
Brought this small bathroom into the 21st
century without taking away from the tudored
brick charm that was the reason for
purchasing this home in the first place. By
mixing the sizes and texture of the tiles
installed, we gave this bathroom a feel
different from the norm. The wall tile
consisted of 12x12 travertine and 3x6
tumbled travertine subway tile with a slate
tile liner. The shower floor was tiled with a
2x2 tumbled travertine tile. Glass tile inserts
were hand blown and imported from Mexico.
TILED SHOWER
BENCH AND
WAINSCOT continued
with the travertine subway
tile design set in a straight
grid pattern using a slate
sheet tile liner as an
accent. Wainscot is
finished by using a
travertine tile chair rail
along the shower and top
edges for a classic design.
BATHROOM SUB-FLOOR
AND UNDERLAYMENT. After
the floor joists and sub-floor were
reinforced, the tile underlayment
was installed by thin setting the
boards down and screwing in place.
The seams were then taped with
fiber glass mesh and tile was
installed and set in a diagonal
pattern which contrasted with the
tile based board and subway tile.

GLASS TILES and STACKED STONE
This kitchen design features a primitive looking glass
tile on the kitchen backsplash.
The glass tile is uneven in shape and size giving the
feeling of hand made tiles. The iridescent quality of
these glass tiles adds to a stunning kitchen design.
Mixed in with the glass tiles are split face mini subway
tiles of natural stone travertine tile. The stone tile is not
grouted. A stone sealer application is all that is needed
for these tiles.
The glass tile does not need to be sealed. Glass tile will
not absorb grease or stain making this an ideal tile for
your remodeling project.
Granite countertop was fabricated with a full bullnose
edge and is an excellent choice for kitchens. The
backsplash wall is cleaned and skimmed with thin set
before tiling begins.
The glass tiles appear solid & look totally different in the
moonlight making for a unique kitchen design.
