KITCHEN REMODELING Design
Castle Rock/Castle Pines tile installation
contractor and Kitchen Remodel Company
This kitchen is remodeled with granite countertop
and river rock tile on the kitchen backsplash.
The kitchen remodeling project is truly unique to
the homeowners and they were thrilled with the
tile selection help that I provided to them as well
as the kitchen design and layout for the tile that
was installed.
The tile design pattern used black natural river
rock tile for the background and gray river rock
as a design running through the entire kitchen tile
backsplash.
Above the stove area the tile installer picture
framed the river rock tile. The husband of the
client wanted a tile mural while his wife did not. I
presented this tile design as a compromise
between mural and no tile mural.
The tile edges were not squared off but ended in a
soft random finish. As shown in the top picture
right side of frame.

KITCHEN COUNTERTOPS
Kitchen backsplashes are usually painted
therefore requiring some prep work before
installing tile to the surface. In most cases wiping
down grease around stove areas will help the next
step. It is important for the entire wall surface to
be tiled to have a skim coat of poly-modified
thinset.
Although there is mastic that can be used to
install pebble or stone tiles we always use thinset
mortar for our tile installations. Skim coating the
wall surface assures maximum bonding strength.
1/2 round ceramic chair rail tile trim finished the
tile work around the kitchen window and the tile
installer mirrored that finish above the stove area
of the kitchen backsplash.
Since we have numbered and taped the tiles to be
installed we next can set them in order. For this
particular job it took three days for two tile
installers to layout and piece together the tile
pattern with the home owners approval.
It took another three days to install and grout the
tile with another trip back to apply the stone
enhancer and sealant after the grout had cured.
KITCHEN TILE INSTALLATION
Once I have finalized the tile design with the home
owner, we begin by marking out a rough layout of
how we would like the tile installers to set the tile
patterns we have chosen. As I’m drawing this out I
am working along with the client and getting
feedback as to what she wants to see.
Once we determine how we want the flow of the
pattern to go we leave the tile installation to the
tile installers. Even so, both the client and I will
oversee how the tile installation layout will
proceed. I encourage our customers for their
input, if so desired. Some clients will leave
everything to us while others have more of a
hands on involvement at this stage.
